Maria Theresa (1717-1780) was empress as the consort of Francis I, who ruled from 1745-1765, and queen of Bohemia and Hungary (1740-1780). She was the daughter of Emperor Charles VI. She succeeded to the Hapsburg lands. During her reign, Vienna became, with Gluck and Mozart, the foremost musical center of Europe. This painting by Austrian artist Martin van Meytens (1695-1770) hangs in the Royal Portrait Gallery in Vienna, Austria.
